This is the season to be jolly! Christmas is around the corner meaning we get to vibe to our favourite Christmas songs. Regardless of your geographical location, there are some Christmas songs we all are familiar with. In this post, I share the 12 most popular Christmas songs of all time. Enjoy!

1.Joy To The World:
“Joy to the World” which is among the most popular Christmas songs of all time was not originally written as a Christmas carol. In its original form, it had nothing to do with Christmas. It wasn’t even written to be a song.

It was written by Isaac Watts who was one of the great hymn writers in church history.
2.Carol Of The Bells:
This song was originally written by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych in 1914 with lyrics by Peter J. Wilhousky. The song is based on a Ukrainian folk chant called “Shchedryk.”
3.O Come All Ye Faithful:
This particular popular Christmas song appears to be the result of a collaboration of several people. What we sing today is a 19th-century version of a hymn written in the 18th century.

Feliz Navidad is among the most popular Christmas songs that are widely sung across the globe. This song was written in 1970 by the Puerto Rican singer and songwriter José Feliciano.
5.Silent Night:
Composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr in the small town of Oberndorf bei Salzburg, Austria, this song has become popular over the years.

6. Away In The Manger:
Its first two stanzas made an early appearance on 2 March 1882, in the “Children’s Corner” section of the anti-masonic journal, The Christian Cynosure under the heading “Luther’s Cradle Song”. It was then claimed to have been written by Martin Luther.

7.Noel by Chris Tomlin ft Lauren Daigle:
This song was penned by Chris Tomlin with Lauren Daigle as the lead vocalist. This song was part of the album “adore: Christmas songs of worship 2015.

8.O Holy Night:
Also known as “Cantique de Noël”, this well-known Christmas carol was composed by Adolphe Adam in 1847. The composer was inspired by the French poem titled “Minuit, chrétiens” (Midnight, Christians) by poet Placide Cappeau (1808–1877). The English version we all sing today was written by Unitarian minister John Sullivan Dwight, editor of Dwight’s Journal of Music in 1855. Other rendition includes that of Mariah Caray and Celine Dion making this song even more popular.

9.12 Days Of Christmas:
Apparently, this song started out as a game and its exact origin are unknown.

10.Mary Did You Know?:
This is a Christmas song addressing Mary, the mother of Jesus. The lyrics were written by Mark Lowry in 1984, and the music was written by Buddy Greene in 1991. It was originally recorded by Christian recording artist Michael English on his self-titled debut solo album in 1991. This song has gained so much popularity throughout the years and we see different versions of it by different singers in different genres.

12.We Three Kings:
The author and com John Henry Hopkins Jr was the author and composer of this song. The carol was written around 1857, based on the narrative of the journey of the magi in Matthew 2:1-12.
