THE EXCEPTIONAL LIFE OF A BARRIER BREAKER: JOIS’ STORY

Jois story

In a nanosecond, I was on the floor. I looked back and there they stood laughing. They intentionally pulled out the chair from under me knowing full well that I was about to take my seat. I didn’t want the usual “after school, run because we are going to beat you” so I chose to ignore and kept quiet. At least this was nothing compared to the hurtful things they say about me. This cycle continued until seventh grade(It started from second grade).

Honestly looking back I will say my bullies sensed something was off about me and used it to their advantage. I have come to the realisation that when one struggle with low self-esteem there is this negative aura that some people sense and use against you. This was my case in primary school, my grades were not appealing and that affected my self-esteem. Nonetheless, the experience has taught me to stand up for others and teach people the importance of being kind.

Jois’ Life Growing Up

Adapting to my new environment was not much of a hassle. At home, I was at peace. My family and I shared a very strong mutual bond, created memories and I had fond moments with my siblings. I remember climbing trees to pluck mangoes, gathering the kids in the hood and reading the bible to them, riding a bicycle behind my parents back etc., those were priceless moments! The only tough part was when I started primary school and the bullying started. This affected me. I remember asking my dad to transfer me to another school which didn’t work but, I made few friends who stood up for me.

Be reflective of your actions.Becarefull of the things you say or do that will affect others.

SISTERS!

Being firstborn is like being a “mini-mom”. The responsibility to look after and discipline my siblings was given to me. As an elder sister, I didn’t use my position to oppress my junior. I created this space where they could voice out their opinions and express themselves freely. If there was an issue that needs solving, together we sit and discuss it and come up with a solution. I love all my sisters equally and we all grew up together.

The Preacher’s Daughter

Being the PK in the block, people tend to put you in a certain category. I was expected to be without fault like a ‘Jesus younger sister”. I felt like I was not allowed to make mistakes and constantly remind myself that people are watching. This was me for years, I wanted to please everyone and it was a burden. It took me years to learn that I’m human and it’s ok for me to make mistakes. What’s important is acknowledging my wrongs, asking God for mercy and not repeating it again. Everyone else and their opinions should not determine my character or affect me negatively.

The Unexpected Gap Years

After ninth grade, I didn’t know what to study or do in high school. Everyone around me seemed to have it all figured out. I kept praying and asking God for direction as to which subjects to choose. The results were out, I got admission into Gambia methodist academy and landed in business class. Although I wasn’t like “the best” student, I worked really hard, did my best and completed high school in 2005

After high school, I started working on my college application. because I wanted to study in the US. However, the process was longer than expected so we opted for the UK. My first visa application was rejected and it got to me. I just could not understand how and why I was rejected. My dad would help others with their application process and it was always successful. Why was mine different? Nonetheless, I cried out to God, asking Him to intervene and He did.

After a little while, I was granted a 3-year visa in 2007 which I later realised was a big miracle. All those I knew had a year visa which was to be renewed annually. God knew I would not have been able to afford the renewal fee thus the delay. What I thought was a rejection worked out in my favour, isn’t God amazing?!

Life in the UK was not easy but it was an experience worth having. I learned how to manage my resources, how to spend money wisely, how to balance life and I built endurance and character.

The story behind BBCorner and the Challenges

Initially, the idea was to create a platform where we can highlight young people in the community doing great things. This idea was still under construction when we had a church youth retreat. As I was the leader by then, I suggested we gave it a theme “Barriers breakers. This retreat will include talks on setting goals, how to manage resources, how to apply life lessons and more. We would gather youths and teach them. Unfortunately, I had to travel so I left with the vision.

In 2019 the Holy Spirit reminded me of the idea. He kept telling me ” your assignment is calling you”. I was a bit reluctant but I stepped out in faith and started. I created a website and a podcast and that’s how we are here today

At BBCorner we don't just celebrate people,we also support them in our own little way.

Listen to the BBCorner podcast on the following platforms:

As someone that’s introverted, putting my face out there, talking to people and making videos was a challenge. I wanted to hide behind the screen and do my thing on a low. My coach made me understand that if I’m to reach out to people to help them then I need to show my face. Let people see the face behind the vision. It took some time to adapt but I’m still learning.

Another challenge is financing. For now, most of the expenses are from my pocket. I’m not a techy person so the technical part of running a blog and podcast is a struggle and getting people to engage and listen to the episode is also a challenge. Nonetheless, I endeavour to show up consistently regardless of the number. It’s God that gives the increase and in due time He will.

In yeras to come,I hope to see BBCorner grow, expand, reach, help, and support more people. I see us holding conferences and mentoring youths.

Wins and Acheivements

The ability to not let other’s opinions affect me negatively is a big win for me. Also, starting BBCorner despite all the fears and uncertainties is a win-win for me.

In this journey called life, I have learned that it’s ok to make mistakes as long as you learn and not repeat the mistakes. Also, I’ve learned that growth is a continuous process and we learn every day.

Jois advise to Youth on how to find their purpose.

Some of us find it difficult to know our passion or purpose. In such a situation it’s advisable you get busy. Be active and don’t just sit doing nothing. Look around you and join groups. It could be charitable organisations, volunteers, public sanitation groups and if you are in church, join any of the departments. In the process, you may discover your passion and therein lies your purpose. Also, the experience you will gain will go a long way, it can even add up to your CV.

Whatever you find yourself doing, be consistent. You have a sphere of influence, these are the people you’ve been called to serve thus do your best to serve them well. Be willing to learn and accept correction. Whatever you do, do it as unto the Lord.

When all is said and done,I want to die empty.I want to give out all God has invested in me.I want people to remember there was a jois that stepped out on faith and if she could then i can.
